Why USA has revoked 85,000 visas?

The US State Department announced that it has revoked approximately 85,000 visas across all categories since January, as part of a broader crackdown on immigration and enhanced national security measures by the Trump administration.1

The top reported reasons for these revocations include:

  • Public Safety Concerns:
    • Driving Under the Influence (DUI)2
    • Assaults3
    • Theft
    • These three criminal offenses reportedly account for almost half of the total revocations.4
  • Security Concerns:
    • Suspected support for terrorism.5
  • Other Reasons:
    • Visa expiration (administrative reasons).6
    • Increased scrutiny on international students, including those involved in protests over the Gaza conflict, with some accused of antisemitism or supporting extremist groups.7
    • Revocations for individuals who allegedly “celebrated” the murder of a conservative activist, Charlie Kirk.8

This surge in revocations is also linked to the administration’s plan, announced in August, to implement “continuous vetting” for all foreign nationals holding valid US visas, allowing visas to be cancelled if new negative information emerges after issuance.9
